Most all area students will be back in school this week or next and that means increased vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic in school zones.  Local, County, and State Police are reminding drivers to be on the lookout for school buses and be prepared to stop when they're loading or unloading children.  And remember, it's illegal for anyone to speed or talk on a cell phone while driving through a school zone.

Captain Will Dimitroff with the Madison County Sheriff's Department says he hopes all drivers in school zones will remember one key tip- to pay attention to their surroundings.

Dimitroff comments

He says kids tend to engage in horseplay, and they need to realize that horseplay near a highway is a recipe for danger.  Dimitroff also says motorists approaching a stopped school bus with its lights activated and arm extended must stop their vehicle before reaching the school bus.  Roadside safety checks will be conducted throughout the school year all over Illinois.
