Drivers now have a second option of showing proof of insurance when they’re pulled over. Those who don’t have a paper copy of their insurance card are now allowed to pull it up on a cell phone or other electronic device. But, doing so means temporarily handing the device over to the officer who made the stop.
The law makes it clear, though, that the officer is not allowed to search through text messages, pictures, e-mails, or any other private content on the device. It also makes it clear that the officer can’t be held liable for the device if it’s damaged it his or her care.
