The Alton City Council has cleared the way for a microbrewery to open in the downtown business district. Richard Blevins Jr. plans to open an establishment to be operated out of a building located at 331 Belle Street. It could open as early as October 1.
Alton was once home to Bluff City Brewery, which survived prohibition only to close in 1952. Mayor Brant Walker says this new brewery - to be called Templar Brewing - will be a nice addition to downtown, and is looking forward to more businesses expanding in the area.
The council has also repealed an ordinance establishing a special use permit for a two-unit guest house in the 300 block of East Third Street. This move will precede final approval of a guest house in the 400 block of East Third Street, which will be marketed toward businesspeople or artists working at Jacoby Arts Center. That plan must still go through the ordinance process.
