A driver heading eastbound on College Avenue in Alton lost control of his car Monday morning, slamming into a power pole and causing the power line to sag dangerously close to the ground.  That resulted in traffic being rerouted for several hours around Upper Alton while Ameren crews worked to fix the damage.

The Atrium Hotel (formerly known as the Holiday Inn) was the only customer to lose power, according to Brian Bretsch.  The biggest worry was that the 4,000-volt line had sagged to within 5 feet of the ground.

The accident happened at around 6:30am Monday.  The accident remains under investigation.
