The Alton School District and its bus service have been named as the defendants in a case filed by a student. Shadawanda Smith claims that she suffered injuries to muscles and ligaments, suffered severe pain and was forced to seek medical care and take medication after an accident that took place on a bus operated by Illinois Central School Bus Co. in March 2012.
The suit claims that the injuries were caused when the driver failed to properly turn into the parking lot at St. Anthony's Hospital from College Avenue. Smith claims that the bus struck the curb, causing it to bounce up and down, which led to her injuries. The suit alleges that the driver failed to maintain proper control of the vehicle, was driving too fast for conditions and repeatedly drove in such a way that forced the bus to ride up and over the curbing. Smith claims the district is responsible because the bus service was acting as an agent of the school district and she is seeking damages of at least $50,000 on each of the two counts included in the suit.
