Firefighters from around the area were busy overnight with a pair of fires starting just hours apart. Around 8:15 p.m. crews from the East Alton Fire Department, Wood River Fire Department, Alton Fire Department and Rosewood Heights Fire Protection District responded to a box alarm fire at a vacant structure in the 150 block of North Shamrock in East Alton. The Roxana Fire Department provided coverage at the East Alton station during the fire.


Then around 3 a.m. crews from eight departments, including East Alton, Olin Brass, Wood River, Alton, Bethalto, Roxana, Hartford and Godfrey, responded to a two-alarm fire at the Olin Corporation's Winchester Division. The blaze destroyed a maintenance building in the 600 block of Powder Mill Road and was brought under control around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported in either fire and the cause of each fire remains under investigation.
