It is looking more like Madison County Sheriff Bob Hertz will have a challenger for his job. Former Madison County Chief Deputy Sheriff and current Glen Carbon Police Chief John Lakin sought the Democratic Party endorsement in the spring primary election. Current Sheriff Bob Hertz received the nod, but Lakin has apparently decided to go ahead with his campaign.
According to a report in the Belleville News-Democrat, Lakin said he thought it was a level playing field, but that playing field "tileed severely." He did not elaborate on that statement. Lakin was with the Madison County Sheriff's Department for 23 years, hiring in under former Sheriff Bob Churchich in 1989. He moved on to Glen Carbon two years ago, but says he always maintained a dream of being sheriff one day. Other Democratic Endorsements include Marleen Suarez, who will run for county treasurer against incumbent Kurt Prenzler, and Venice Schools Superintendent Cullen Cullen, who will go up against State Representative Dwight Kay.
