The redevelopment of the Defense area in East Alton continues to make progress with the help of county funding. Madison County Board members approved a $550-thousand community development loan to fund the construction of 46 affordable rental homes as part of the Defense Area Redevelopment Project.
County Board chairman Alan Dunstan says this isn’t the first time the county has worked with East Alton on this project.
The Defense area takes up a large portion of the center of town, bordered by the library and the Middle School on the south along 3rd Street, and the Wilshire Village Shopping Center to the north. Dunstan says this decision was easy to make given the past relationship with East Alton and the substantial improvement the community will see after the project is completed.
