Deer season is about to begin – the firearm season, “our most popular deer hunting season, and that’s the one people look forward to every year,” says Chris Young, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The dates are Nov. 21, 22, 23, and Dec. 4, 5, 6, 7 – the weekends before and after Thanksgiving.

“For almost 100 years, we were working to bring white-tail deer back in Illinois, and then you change your strategy to finding a level that’s acceptable to everyone – farmers, hunters, motorists,” says Young of the long-term plan toward herd management. Hunters must tag their kills and turn them in by 10 p.m. each evening. Young says the DNR must keep track of how many deer are taken in each county, and the dead deer cannot be simply left where they fall.
