Organizers spear heading an effort to build a statue of Miles Davis in downtown Alton are one step closer to achieving that goal, having named a sculptor. Committee chairperson Pat Ackman says that they have secured the services of Preston Jackson (pictured), an artist whose work can be seen in the form of historic figures placed around the state in cities like Peoria, Maywood, Chicago and Springfield.
Ackman says the statue will be placed somewhere in the downtown entertainment district.
Fundraising has been underway through the use of public awareness campaigns at various events. The hope is to utilize the upcoming block parties to generate both awareness and money for the project. Ackman hopes the project will be complete by May 26, 2014, which would have been Davis' 88th birthday.
