The retailers of Illinois are again carrying the flag for fairness. Through the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, they want Congress to force online merchants to collect sales taxes.  Zach Hoffman says the ability to easily buy things online without paying a sales tax is “simply a marketing advantage applied by a government restriction,” and it’s hurting businesses such as his Springfield office furniture store.

IRMA President David Vite says every time you drive past an empty space that formerly housed a Borders or Circuit City, think of the property tax revenue your city is missing out on – and the extra pressure it’s putting on everyone else.  Longtime anti-tax advocate Jim Tobin says the local retailers have it backwards: that what they ought to do is lobby their lawmakers to roll back sales taxes, not find more merchants to tax.
