The company which sells electricity to much of Downstate Illinois is asking the Illinois Commerce Commission for more money. The request from Ameren faces opposition from the Citizens Utility Board.
“The company is proposing to raise (electricity) rates by more than $206 million,” says CUB spokesman Jim Chilsen. “That would be an increase of … $10 or $12 per month for average customers of Ameren.”

The money would be for the new power grid, but Chilsen says the efficiencies gained from the improvements should cover their cost.
“After a brutal winter, this is the last news that Ameren customers want to hear,” Chilsen adds.
