Another day, another executive order from Gov. Bruce Rauner – but this one was about crime and punishment. The governor announced the formation of a Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform, citing prison overcrowding and recidivism. “There's always data flowing around. We need it focused, we need it concentrated, we need to make sure that every interest group is reflected at the table,” Rauner said, “that the right experts are brought in to bear, and that this is brought in on a coordinated, managed basis, not a disorganized basis.”
Rauner says the group, to be led by former U.S. Attorney Rodger Heaton, will examine Illinois criminal justice and sentencing at every level and report back by July 1.
