The driver killed in a fatal wreck in Alton in March was four times the legal limit of intoxication at the time of the crash. That was the ruling Wednesday by a Madison County Coroner’s Jury in Edwardsville. 27 year old Christina Martinez of Fairmount City was killed when her car struck the Con-Agra Building near West Broadway and Williams Street.
Witnesses report Martinez was driving about 100 miles per hour eastbound on the Great River Road the early evening of March 9 when she clipped another car at the Clifton Terrace intersection and kept going. The driver of the second vehicle complained of a sore neck, but refused treatment. Minutes later, witnesses say Martinez lost control of her SUV entering downtown Alton, hit the Con Agra grain elevator, and ended in the traffic lane. The Madison County Coroner reports she died of head and chest trauma. Her blood alcohol level was .365. Martinez was the lone occupant of the vehicle, and was not wearing a seatbelt.
