An area police officer accused of spying on women at a tanning salon has quit the force. Edwardsville police officer 46 year old Michael Collins was charged this week with three counts of unauthorized video recording. Prosecutors say Collins secretly took videos of women with his cell phone as they got ready to tan at a business in Glen Carbon last week. His resignation was effective as of Tuesday.
Collins was a senior patrol officer with the force, and his supervisors have said his police record was clear. Authorities say there have been no indications that Collins alleged actions were tied in any way to his job, including that of a D.A.R.E. officer in the Edwardsville School District. He was charged after a woman at the Image Sun Tanning Center contacted police when she says she witnessed Collins taking a picture of her over a wall while she was in a tanning booth. Police say when they confiscated the phone, they found images of two other women. The Illinois State Police continues to investigate the case.
