Health care professionals and emergency officials continue to keep a close eye on the heat. The heatwave that has descended across the area late last month prompted several locations to offer their facilities as daytime cooling centers, and they remain open as the temperature again flirts with the century mark. About one-thousand people have suffered heat related deaths in Illinois over the past 15 years.

Open during daytime hours are the Alton Square Mall, the Salvation Army, Senior Services Center, and the YWCA. Fire stations 1 & 2 are also available on a short-term basis, as they may not be staffed if called out on an emergency run. If you live in Bethalto, the community center will be open around the clock, according to Fire Chief Rich Mersinger.

The Village Hall in Godfrey and the Roundhouse in Wood River will also be open during regular business hours. You can also dial 2-1-1 from any land-line phone to contact the United Way to find a cooling center near you.
