Health care professionals and emergency officials are keeping a close eye on the heat this week. The heatwave that has blanketed the eastern half of the United States has temperatures locally flirting with the mid-to-upper 90's into the weekend. While that is plenty warm, it's not quite into the category that would prompt the opening of United Way cooling centers.
But the United Way's Carrie Zukoski says if it gets a little warmer, that could change.
If temperatures do climb to that level, you can dial 2-1-1 from any land-line phone to contact the United Way to find a center near you. Zukoski says that even though it is just slightly cooler than the threshold for opening the centers, you should still take precautions to make sure you are not overheating, and she urges you check in on the elderly, the very young, and animals.
