Politicians on Capitol Hill should make a decision this week on two major issues that would expire come July 1st. The first is an extension of the Federal Surface Transportation Bill. Illinois’ congressional members are hopeful for a long term plan but some have said they would accept a shorter extension.

Also for Congress to consider, is keeping federal student loan interest rates from going up. They are set to double come July 1st. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says it is likely the bills will be wrapped into one measure. “”What appears what we’re trying to do now is put everything in a package that would include the transportation bill, the student loan bill and possibly flood insurance reauthorization, all three have July 1st deadlines,” Durbin said.

Top congressional leaders were said to have met over the weekend to discuss the issues.
