A proposed constitutional amendment to merge the offices of Treasurer and Comptroller is picking up dozens of republican lawmakers as supporters. House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment number three would eliminate the Comptroller and Treasurer’s offices to create the Comptroller of the Treasurer after 2018.
This was also proposed during the recent final special session of the 98th General Assembly, but the majority Democrats instead voted for a special election for 2016 to fill the final two years of the Comptroller’s term. Judy Baar Topinka died weeks before taking the oath for a second term. Governor Bruce Rauner selected Lesley Munger to the constitutional office. Munger says she’ll run in the 2016 election and also push for elimination of the Comptroller’s office, something Topinka supported.
