Alton Middle School parents are invited to a meeting at the main cafeteria tonight from 6:00-7:00 as the district shares information regarding the new Common Core State Standards and the curriculum at the school.  The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an education initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should know in English and math at the end of each grade.

At least one local lawmaker wants a delay in the implementation of the new policy.  State Representative Dwight Kay (R-Glen Carbon) says the Common Core Standards are unproven in their effectiveness, and it presents a financial burden that is significant to the extent that he does not believe it is feasible to implement statewide at this point.
