Word that Alton may soon have a statue to honor jazz legend Miles Davis was shared with the crowd at the jazz festival bearing his name last weekend. That topic, and consideration of another memorial was discussed at the Alton Committee of the Whole Meeting last night at City Hall. While no location has been picked out yet, Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst said last night the word that it is even being considered has apparently spread like wildfire.
Another group is hoping to develop a memorial to honor Western Military Academy. That property on Seminary Street is now owned by Mississippi Valley Christian School, and a fundraising effort will also begin for that project. In other Committee of the Whole business, the city made its final payment to Jun Construction for the downtown sidewalk project. Some in the community questioned whether the work was ADA compliant. Hoechst says he has been assured it is, noting that due to the age of the buildings in Downtown, there is a bit of leeway given on the measurements.
