A new Community Relations Commission in Alton is on hold – at least for the next couple of weeks. The Alton City Council chose to lay over a resolution that would create an ordinance establishing a new 11-member commission to address the “fair treatment of all people without regard to race, color, creed, or national origin.”
The move to lay over the ordinance was brought by Alderman Gary Fleming and seconded by Alderman Jim Ryan, who says he has fielded questions from people wanting to know more about it.

He and Alderman Fleming both stated they felt it would be beneficial to take more time to examine the proposal before passing it. Aldermen Alice Martin and David Boulds cast the only dissenting votes. With the lay over, the issue will automatically come back before the council at its next meeting on February 11.
