Two local fire departments requested a special Code Red call today to announce the boil order. Illinois American Water issued the order at 6:30am today, and the fire chief of Godfrey requested a call go out to residents as a reminder. Madison County Emergency Management then asked if Alton wanted a similar announcement since some of its residents were impacted, and the Alton Fire Chief agreed.
The Code Red announcement was issued by phone at about 10:20am today. Code Red is an emergency notification system for any Madison County resident to use, but in order to receive the call, you must register in advance. In the past, the calls have been used to warn of severe weather and flash flooding.
