A system that digitizes existing school plans and stores them in a “cloud” for emergency responders to find is getting a test run in five Illinois school districts. It’s called NaviGate Prepared, and it is running in 175 districts around the country. The five Illinois districts in the pilot are Cuba, Fisher, Grayslake, Quincy, and Robinson.

“Columbine comes to mind” when one thinks of school tragedies, says Ben Schwarm, deputy executive director of the Illinois Association of School Boards, which is involved in the pilot as well. “One of the problems that they discovered was when police did arrive, they didn’t know exactly what the layout of the school was.”
The program uses floor plans, emergency plans, and security details. The IASB is promoting NaviGate Prepared as an anti-terror tool.
