State officials are assisting local residents in assessing the damage in the Greene County community of Hillview following the failure of a levee over the weekend. Much of the town was flooded after a Hurricane Creek levee failed on Sunday following six to seven inches of rain.
The town was evacuated on Sunday as a precaution, but authorities from neighboring Morgan County assisted Greene County officials in rescuing some residents from their homes. The water quickly receded by late Sunday, and by Monday, most residents were able to return to their homes or property. Authorities estimated nearly 80-percent of the town was covered by standing water after the flash flood. Republican State Senator Sam McCann of Carlinville toured the community on Monday and promised to work on state assistance to repair the levee.
