Alton's desire to develop the Wadlow Golf Course on the Homer Adams Parkway has gotten a huge boost with the announcement the city has been awarded a TIGER Grant. The overall plan is to build a new train station for the coming high-speed rail upgrades. Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst says he got the news Monday morning.
The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Grant is federal money that will be added to a $7.4-million IDOT grant the city has already secured for the project. The city has to come up with a 20% match, but Hoechst doesn't have an exact dollar number, since the city had originally applied for $17-million. Alton is getting the bulk of the $50-million Illinois has received from the federal government for high-speed rail.
