Work to fix the sinkhole in the back pit at Alton Middle School should begin early next year.  The problem is a broken storm sewer. The engineering is to be completed over the winter, and bids will go out in the spring.  The target date for completion is June 30, 2015.

The agreement calls for the city and the school district to split the cost of the repairs 50 / 50.  Alton Corporation Counselor Jim Schrempf says once the ground is opened up and the digging begins, the city may opt to also install a sanitary sewer line.

One other benefit of doing it this way, is the cost of repairing the parking lot after the work is done.  Schrempf says the district already has a plan to resurface that and other lots over the summer.  In other city business, the resolution to require cigarette diffusers outside bars and restaurants passed unanimously.  It must still go through the ordinance process, which could take another month.
