Matt Melucci, the longtime Madison County Circuit Clerk and Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee, has died. The 69-year-old passed away at 10pm Thursday. He had recently announced he would be retiring at the end of November. Melucci held the Circuit Clerk's job since he was first elected in 1992.
Madison County Board Chairman Alan Dunstan says Melucci had been battling cancer in recent months, and had been making progress.
He had previously served as executive director of the East-West Gateway Council of Governments and as director of the Southwestern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission. A veteran of the United States Army, he was the first chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, serving from 1989 until his election to the Circuit Clerk's office. He had served as a Democratic committeeman from Collinsville for the past 27 years.
