Several listeners to Z-1570 reported seeing at least three Chinook military helicopters in the region last week. After calls to several military installations in the Missouri - Illinois region, a spokesman representing the Illinois Air National Guard says while he cannot comment on the specific flight, training flights occur in this area on a regular basis.
Callers last week reported seeing the helicopters over Wood River and parts of Godfrey, where several people said they heard the choppers late in the evening at what appeared to be a low altitude. There are Air National Guard bases in Springfield, Peoria and Decatur in Illinois, and a Missouri units at Lambert St. Louis International Airport, Whiteman Air Force Base in Kansas City, and Rosecrans Memorial Airport near St. Joseph. The Chinook is a twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter that has been used in military operations dating back to Vietnam.
