When you are counting up criticisms of the Affordable Care Act, don't forget the dentists – because much of the ACA seems to have done just that, according to an Orland Park dentist who has been studying the issue. An exception is children: “There are supposedly about 8.7 million children expected to gain some form of dental benefits by 2018 as a result of the new health care law,” says Dr. Loren Feldner, who is active in the American Dental Association and the Chicago Dental Society and who practices in Orland Park.

Feldner says the rush to implement the hydra-headed monster has left much of his discipline behind, which, he says, is a shame, as poor oral health is a gateway to other problems. “Some of the same bacteria that are found in some of the plaque and in the mouth are some of the same inflammatory processes that happen in the blood vessels around the heart,” he says. He adds tests of gum tissues can detect diabetes earlier than tests elsewhere.
