Fireworks injuries result in thousands of people taking trips to the hospital each year, with most happening around the Fourth of July. All fireworks are meant to be displayed at a distance- most injuries occur when people get too close. In addition to the potential for injury, local fire chiefs worry about the lack of rain and the increased fire hazard

East Alton Fire Chief Randy Mortland recommends some safety precautions when using fireworks.

Mortland comments

He reminds that most fireworks are illegal in Illinois, but realizes many will not be deterred by the law. He says if anyone is injured by fireworks, they should go to a hospital emergency room as quickly as possible.
