Keeping backyard chickens in residential areas of Godfrey will not be permitted, as the village's Public Safety Committee voted against ordinance that would have allowed the practice. The issue came up earlier this summer when a resident on Walter Street asked the board to consider legalizing chickens, claiming he didn't know it was illegal to keep them.
Trustees Mark Stewart, Jeff Weber and Jerry Gibson voted against the proposal, while Sarah Johnes and Mike Stumpf were in favor. Godfrey Trustee Eldon "Twirp" Williams did not get a vote, as he chairs the Public Safety Committee:
Since the issue failed in committee, it was not presented to the Village Board. Also last night, an ordinance was approved by the full board allowing for temporary one way traffic on Paris Drive. This is in response to concerns over traffic and safety during the popular Paris Drive Christmas Lights display. An agreement was hashed out at last month's meeting, and the ordinance addressing the traffic flow puts the wraps on that process.
