The Madison County State's Attorney's office has filed charges against a suspect accused in a fatal hit and run accident near Route 3. 50-year-old Shari Watts of East Alton was found dead along Illinois Route 3 about a half mile south of Niedringhaus Avenue just after 7am Saturday. 23-year-old Gabrielle Parent (pictured) of Granite City is charged with Failure To Report An Accident Involving Personal Injury or Death.
That is a Class 1 felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Parent was arrested Sunday and her car was impounded, according to Major Jeff Connor of the Granite City Police Department.
Connor says the area where Watts was killed was just south of where Niedringhaus Avenue and Route 3 intersect in an area he would consider industrial. He says there are 3 lanes in each direction in that area. Authorities believe Watts was last seen alive asking for a ride in Brooklyn Friday night.
