A 48-year-old Alton man is now charged in the death of a passenger in his van Sunday morning. Kenneth Jewan Jones of the 1,200 block of Alby Street is charged with failure to report an accident involving death, and could face additional charges pending the results of toxicology tests. 45-year-old Kimala L. Harrison of the 3,100 block of Lawn Street in Alton died in the crash around 12:30am.

Captain Scott Waldrup of the Alton Police Department says the chain of events leading up to Harrison's death began at a safety belt check at the corner of Elm and Alby.

Waldrup comments

Police were unable to get in their cars quick enough to give chase, but were flagged down by residents near the crash scene. The van apparently left the roadway after Jones lost control, hit a stump in a yard, going airborne. It crashed into a pair of cars parked in a driveway, and when police arrived on the scene, Harrison was laying on the ground next to the van. Jones was no where to be found, but turned himself in later that day. Harrison died at St. Anthony's Hospital just before 3am Sunday.
