A man who police say drove his car into the back end of a pavement striping vehicle last spring is now facing formal criminal charges. 34 year old Michael Jeter of West Frankfort has been charged in St. Clair County Court with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence in connection with the death of 38 year old Dennis Beard of Pocahontas and injury of three other men.
Authorities say Jeter was allegedly under the influence of tranquilizers and a sleep aid when he crashed his car on I-64 near Fairview Heights May 22, after witnesses reported he was driving erratically just before the crash. Beard died at the scene, and three other men who were also working for Briteway Striping Services were injured, but are recovering. Jeter also suffered serious injuries, but survived.
