A mother in-law and daughter in-law are charged with Theft over $500 after police allegedly caught them stealing items bound for the Community Hope Center in Cottage Hills. Detectives made two arrests Wednesday, charging 45-year-old Jerri A. Jones of the 7,300 block of Montclair Avenue in Godfrey and 64-year-old Betty C. Jones of the 400 block of Augusta Street in Alton with felony theft over $500. They were allegedly unloading food intended for the needy at the home on Augusta Street.
The women were apparently working as volunteers for the center and were supposed to pick up donations at the St. Louis Food Bank and deliver them to the pantry in Cottage Hills.
Alton Police Lieutenant Scott Golike says investigators reportedly found a large number of food and beverage items inside the residence, but since some of the items had not been opened, those will be forwarded to the Community Hope Center for distribution to those in need. Bond for each was set at $15,000.
