A small party turned deadly Wednesday morning, according to Alton homicide investigators. Police believe 20-year-old Christopher Stewart of Alton shot 24-year-old Carlos Reeves, of East St. Louis in the head and shoulder during a disturbance in a garage behind the home at at 824 Brown Street. Stewart is being held on a million-dollar bond, charged with two counts of murder.

The 911 call to report a shooting came in at 1:40am that morning, and when first responders arrived, they found Reeves dead. Lieutenant Scott Golike of the Alton Police Department says a dispute had been developing between the two.

Stewart has a series of misdemeanor convictions, mostly for traffic violations. A misdemeanor conviction for possession of a firearm, however, was originally charged as felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in December of 2009 before the charge was reduced a few months later. This is the first homicide in Alton this year.
