An Alton man is facing up to eight years in prison after he allegedly stole two diamond rings from the Wood River Wal-Mart Supercenter on Wednesday night. 39-year old, Eric J. Weaver of the 800 block of Washington Avenue has been charged with one felony count of retail theft over $300 and one felony count of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
Officials say the suspect stole the diamonds in Wood River, and led police on a chase that ended in a Hazelwood parking lot. Officers from several local departments pursued the driver through town and through several other jurisdictions before terminating the chase on Interstate 270 at the Missouri State Line. A short time later, Wood River police got a call from Hazelwood Police who had apparently caught the man. The rings were recovered after a short foot chase following a traffic stop. Weaver is being held on a $75-thousand bond.
