A local couple is facing charges after police found their two year old child walking in the street for the second time in less than two months. The Madison County Sheriff's Department was called to a report of a child found near 9th Street and East Airline Drive last Friday morning. Police later found the father asleep at the child's home.
28 year old Nathan Woods of the 1900 block of Burling Drive in Alton was found asleep by police inside a residence in the first block of Fern Lane. Police report Woods believed the child was with his mother, 25 year old Kristal Rushing, who lives at the home. Deputies found a second child, a one year old, inside the home, and reported the home to be in poor condition and smelled like urine. Captain Mike Dixon of the Madison County Sheriff's Department says the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was contacted and took the children into protective custody, while Woods was taken to the Madison County Jail.
During the course of the investigation, police were notified of a possible drunk driver and located Rushing as she attempted to pull into the driveway of the home. She was questioned and taken into custody and is charged with felony DUI. Police report county authorities were called on September 2 to the report of a child wandering in the street at the same location at which time Rushing was charged with child endangerment and possession of cannabis. The father was not involved in that incident.
