An attempt to change provisions to the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program failed in the House. State Rep. Mary Flowers sponsored the bill.  “The intent of this legislation would be to allow designated areas in Chicago to follow the same rules as the rest of the state,” Flowers said.

Many lawmakers had problems with the bill; whether it was infringing on the Catholic charities that run the WIC program or it was taking away valuable aspects of the program.  “Every now and then, folks, we stick our nose in areas that we really shouldn’t. And we have a habit of turning a good thing into a bad thing and I am afraid that is what this legislation is going to do,” State Rep. Jim Durkin (R- Western Springs) said.
HB 29 failed the House, 35-79-1.
