Many Madison County homeowners who are facing foreclosure have seen relief through a program that is now nearly three years old.  Land of Lincoln Legal Aid in Alton launched the Madison County Foreclosure Mediation Project in the summer of 2011, and a recent Illinois Supreme Court Ruling is making the program mandatory for all homeowners facing foreclosure.

Program Administrator Jennifer Dunham says in the past, the mediation was voluntary, but the homeowner had to get the ball rolling.

Another change allows the mediators to be paid, where they were offering their services pro bono in the past.  Dunham says they are paid from a fund that is paid for by the mortgage companies.  A fee is charged for every foreclosure filed in Madison County, which is funneled into this program.  For more information, call 296-4760.
