Young deer hunters in Illinois don't have to get discouraged if they don't make a kill during the October youth season. They can now use the same permit, if it has not been filled, for the weekend before Thanksgiving.

“Those youth hunters who are unsuccessful in filling their permit,” says Department of Natural Resources spokesman Tim Schweizer, “the department wants to give them an additional opportunity to take a deer during the first weekend of the firearm season in November.”

A DNR news release says the change came at the suggestion of hunters. The youth season, Columbus Day weekend, is for children age 15 and younger. The youth permit costs $10.50.
