Work is underway on a new bridge to carry traffic across the Chain of Rocks Canal at Granite City. The new canal bridge will connect Illinois Route 3 to the bridge that crosses the Mississippi River into Missouri. IDOT spent much of the summer rebuilding the Route 3 / Interstate 270 Interchange from a cloverleaf ramp system to one with traffic control lights.
The new bridge, however, is being built to replace the existing one that has apparently become more expensive to fix than to replace. The new bridge will be built just north of the current one, which was built almost 50 years ago. The project will cost an estimated $104-million, and is the most expensive project ever for IDOT's Collinsville office. Traffic should be mostly unencumbered during the course of the project. The new bridge is expected to be completed by the fall 2014.
