Plans to upgrade one of Bethalto’s major thoroughfares have been put on hold after the Illinois Department of Transportation rejected the original plan for the first phase of the Central Street project. The design included a proposed one-way loop that would have taken traffic down Mill Street to Oak Street and eventually back onto Central Street but IDOT shot down that proposal and sent a counter proposal back to Village leaders who came up with an alternate plan that has been sent back to IDOT for approval.
Bethalto Mayor Alan Winslow says the project will now be pushed back significantly.

He adds that delaying the project may have some additional benefits such as avoiding closing the roadway during the school year and giving them the option to close the intersection down for the duration of the project which could save the Village as much as $70,000.
