A car fire in Godfrey on Friday remains under investigation after authorities not only found a burning car in a driveway, but also human remains inside. The Madison County Sheriff's Department says it has made a tentative identification of the person found dead inside the car, but are withholding the information pending further forensic efforts. The fire took place in the 300 block of Lakeside Drive in Godfrey.
Madison County Sheriff's Department Chief of Detectives Captain Mike Dixon first told Z-1570 news on Friday that a neighbor called in the report of the fire:
Dixon says at this point there's no conclusive evidence suggesting the death or fire is criminal in nature. The Sheriff's Department has been joined by the Illinois State Fire Marshall's Office, the Illinois State Police Criminal Forensic Investigative Unit, and the Madison County Coroner's Office.
