An endorsement of a candidate for Madison County Sheriff is raising eyebrows in Bethalto. A letter signed by Bethalto Police Chief Greg Smock, endorsing John D. Lakin is on Bethalto Police Department letterhead and was sent in an envelope with a Bethalto police Department return address.
According to state election law [section 5/9-25.1 (b)] “No public funds shall be used to urge any elector to vote for or against any candidate or proposition…” Smock says this is not an endorsement by the entire department.

A spokesman with the Illinois State Board of Elections says any investigation into the matter would be handled locally, in this case, by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office. We have left messages with both the Lakin campaign and also the Madison County State’s Attorney and are awaiting their response.
