News cameras are coming for the first time to the criminal courts in Madison County. The Illinois Supreme Court voted earlier this year to allow still and video cameras in court proceedings at the Criminal Justice Center in Edwardsville, and recently gave approval to another circuit in the northern part of the state.
Madison County Chief Circuit Judge Ann Callis says she wanted to get the 3rd Judicial Circuit out in front of what she believes will be the norm at some point.
Justices voted 7-0 in favor of allowing the cameras in the pilot program. Supporters say there have been no ill effects in neighboring states that have allowed cameras in their courtrooms. Callis was recently reelected to another two-year term as Chief Judge.
