News cameras are coming for the first time to the courts in Madison County. The Illinois Supreme Court has voted to allow still and video cameras in court proceedings at the Criminal Justice Center in Edwardsville. Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride announced the decision yesterday. The state Supreme Court had earlier authorized courts in the Quad Cities area and Kankakee County to allow news cameras in courtrooms.
Kilbride says it will allow citizens to be better informed about how the justice system works. Madison County Chief Circuit Judge Ann Callis says she wanted to get the 3rd Judicial Circuit out in front of what she believes will be the norm at some point:
Justices voted 7-0 in favor of allowing the cameras in the pilot program. Cameras are soon expected to come to Chicago area courts.
