There’s a call for a higher cigarette tax in Missouri. Attorney General Chris Koster would like the state to pass a higher cigarette tax and use the new money for college scholarships for state students. Koster says the tax on cigarettes in Missouri is the lowest in the nation at 17 cents a pack and he’d like it to be increased to 90 cents a pack.
Koster’s proposal would be linked to Treasurer Clint Zweifel's plan to offer college tuition for Missouri high school students who get a three-point-oh grade point average or above and meet other criteria. Koster is the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for Missouri governor in 2016.
