It was a busy day in the Riverbend Tuesday with three serious accidents in a 24-hour period in Wood River, and accidents in Alton and East Alton. Early Tuesday, a 57-year-old man was found lying in the roadway in the 100 block of Haller in Wood River around 2:20am. The driver of the vehicle that reportedly struck the man remained at the scene and was later taken into custody on charges of DUI. The victim is in stable condition.
Just before 8:30am, Wood River Police and Fire responded to a hit and run at Edwardsville Road and 9th Street. One vehicle struck three others before crashing near the Hit and Run store in the 900 block of Edwardsville Road. Police believe the driver was impaired and charges are pending. Two people suffered minor injuries and were treated at local hospitals.
Then yesterday afternoon, two people on a motorcycle were injured when the bike collided with a flatbed tow truck at Ferguson and Third Streets in Wood River. Both of the passengers were airlifted to hospitals in St. Louis.
East Alton Police responded to an accident early Tuesday morning on Airline Drive in Rosewood Heights when a car struck a utility pole. Ameren crews had to disconnect power for a time for about 300 customers on Tuesday morning to make repairs. Charges against the driver are pending.
Police and fire officials in Alton responded to a rollover accident just after 10am on Alton Square Mall Drive near MLK Boulevard. The driver suffered minor injuries.
